Project-based Professional Development Input

Project-based Professional Development can be used in a technology-rich environment, perhaps as part of the school day (during enrichment time) to provide opportunities for students and teachers to work in mixed teams with projects which could be implemented in the classroom. Projects that are student-run and student-led with teachers working as facilitators of project guidelines and processes would provide a format classroom networking and collaboration that is engaging, motivating, and mutually beneficial to students and teachers in the learning community. ~ George

Project-based PD can be essential for both educators and students. It allows both parties the opportunity to work together, to learn together, and to create meaningful and creative projects that will help them grow as educators and students. It allows both parties to take step in each others' shoes and to realize what it takes from both sides to initiate and complete any and all work. It creates both networking and collaboration among them. In addition, educators are able to get a first-hand experience of seeing what interests students and how students react to projects, and students are able to see things that could be expected of them and that they should always think creatively and critically. PD in this sense benefits everyone. (Danje' )

Ok, that looks great! I think we should break down each day like that (with two sessions). What topics would you guys like to do? I think someone mentioned just having participants learn and do things that we learned throughout the textbook. ~ Danje'

Hey all, I think the schedule looks great. I'll do whatever you want me to do. ~ George

The first part of the challenge requests us to "consider how project-based professional development with educators and students can be used to teach both educators and students with mutually beneficial outcomes." Feel free to change, edit, re-name this area. I like the schedule above which I feel would accommodate both requirements of the challenge. I have added a "Project-based professional development input" section just below session 4, for all of us to share our thoughts and ideas. Hope everyone likes this. I also like the idea of topics we have learned from the course. Under the Content section, the Non-cognitive skills: perseverance and self-regulation, is an area I would enjoy working with to incorporate some things from what we learned about being digital citizens, netiquette, and expectations early on in the text. I think this looks great! ~George Wilson

I think this looks great as well! Thanks so much Lori for finding and posting it! I am willing to work with whatever interest you all! I will check back and see where we are later today and tomorrow and go from there. I like the idea of doing the things that we have learned throughout this course. ~Lori Ann

Hello Everyone, Looks good to me too. I have some things I can add about differentiation as soon as we finalize what topics we decide on. I have tried to differentiate lessons in my math classes more this year, so maybe I can conjure up some ideas. I'll check back in this weekend. ~ Karen

Hello all! Sorry I'm late, internet issues :-/ I think the schedule looks great! As for topics to focus on, why don't we use some of the ones from our book such as creating and using wikis and blogs for collaboration between schools. We can create a project that involves creating, personalizing, and using a wiki and/or blog to cooperate with another "classroom." We could include a hands-on location such as a computer lab and teachers could communicate with one another from different computers which would represent their classrooms. Just a thought! -Rachel

Hello:) Before we came up with a schedule I was thinking about creating a wiki. I had a one day schedule that involved our students rotating to a different class with each class explaining one particular aspect/step to creating a successful wiki. Each class had the students separated into wiki teams. For example, one class discussed setting up a user name/password. The next class would detail the components of site navigation. Next, the students would vote on the topic to be discussed on the wiki. This would continue with small breaks between morning and afternoon sessions where students could summarize the things learned and list questions/concerns for the facilitators. The facilitators would meet at the end of the day to discuss the concerns/questions and prepare feedback for the next day. The reason I wrote all of this :) is to ask if I should put anything like this in the schedule above and if so....where. This project is a little more confusing to me and I want to make sure I am on the same page with all of you. If none of this applies, just let me know and I will add (above) what I need to add. For some reason this doesn't seem as easy to edit as Challenge 13....maybe my brain is still on spring break..lol

Project-based professional development with educators and students allows educators and students to work together and become equals on a classroom project, instead of the traditional roles teacher = lectures, students = listeners. It provides the students with a chance to take on and practice leadership roles. This gives the teacher the opportunity to learn from the students, and learn about their students’ behavior and personality. By providing the opportunity for educators and students to work together, students will develop an understanding that an educator is very similar to them. They are human and are continuously learning new information daily. Amy

Hello group! I really like this schedule. It has a variety of topics that covers all aspect of teaching common core standards. I especially like the fact that differentiated instruction was included and discussed on Day 2. This is such an important topic for classrooms today because every classroom has a diverse group of learners. Teachers need to be reminded that they need to meet the needs of all their students and learn new ways to accomplish this task. Good job everyone! Amy

Hello :) This looks wonderful! I have been a little confused with this project as well. I really cannot see anything that could be added at this point will check in later and look again! Great work! ~Lori Ann

Hello! So, based from the comments, I'm assuming we're going along with the schedule as written above? Cool! I was really confused about what we were going with. I'll go ahead and change preferences for the wiki. I've added my comment for the discussion above. Thanks again for allowing me to participate with you all. Can you believe we're one chapter away from completion?! ^_^ ~ Danje'

Hello Team:) If something else needs to be added about the advantages of Project Based PD I thought it might be good to mention the use of rubrics. Rubrics are a great tool that gives specifics about the project that is assigned. Working as a team, students can discuss whether or not their project meets certain requirements in the rubric. This is great for them to collaborate together and learn about not only the work ethics of their teammates but it it enables them to learn from each other. Teachers, on the other hand can collaborate about the rubric used for the project and determine whether or not it meets the specifications for a determined grade requirement. They not only learn about the students that created the project, but they are able to learn from each other in order to make the next rubric align appropriately---maybe more accurately---with the next project.
Collaborating with another class globally will bring up all kinds of challenges. However, when you have Project Based PD before this collaboration takes place, the students as well as the teachers will have been trained and prepared for what lies ahead. This will also give them insight as to the fact that things will occur that will need to be addressed. Working as a team students and teachers will benefit from this type experience.
Karen ---Feel free to tweak above with anything from my paragraph.

When we get the "All Clear" from Lori and Danje' I'll be ready to copy and blog:)!

Hey All! I have really enjoyed all the work we have been doing together the past few weeks. We have come up with so much more together than I ever could have on my own. And I think our results have been better too. It is so nice to read and consider so many different vantage points! I am really pleased with the above schedule for PD. If anyone ever needs anything from me for any reason please just let me know. I have really enjoyed working with all of you! ~Rachel

All looks good to me. Thanks for all the input. ~Lori

I think everything looks great! Thank you guys for allowing me to work with you on this challenge. I was a little confused on what we were suppose to do, but I feel like together we have accomplished the goal. It is wonderful to sit back and think we only have one more chapter and challenge left to complete. I have learned a lot, but it has been definately CHALLENGING along the way. I have met a lot of great people in this class that has helped me figure all this new technology terminology and webpages out. Thanks everyone!

You all are great and it has been a honor to work with you! :) Thanks for allowing me to be a part and have input. ~ Lori Ann
